The actor’s revelation that his wife Kiran Rao had suggested moving out of the country because of the rising levels of intolerance ripped open sentiments and became the biggest talking point on social media.
The fallout of the controversial statement was the return of the raging intolerance debate that has haunted the Narendra Modi government.
Political faultlines were laid bare, with the BJP slamming the superstar who is also the icon of the tourism ministry’s Incredible India campaign, but the Congress and other anti-saffron parties came to his rescue as they saw a vindication of their stance in Khan’s remarks on the rising level of intolerance.
Khan’s expression of alarm and despondency over the rise in incidents of intolerance in the last six to eight months has been seen as yet another indictment of the Modi government, which is already grappling with protests from a section of writers and artists who have returned their National Awards.
Fellow superstar Shah Rukh Khan had also faced outrage after making similar observations on intolerance on his birthday recently, but Aamir’s comments raised more eyebrows as he was seen in the company of Prime Minister Modi as one of the ambassadors of Swachh Bharat (Clean India) campaign.
BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain countered Aamir by claiming that India was the best country in the world.
